Have five minutes? That’s all it’ll take to kick your success motivation into high gear.
When you need to make a change, having big consequences and big rewards makes all the difference.
A few years ago, I came face to face with a huge challenge and used big consequences and rewards to get to the other side.
I was at my heaviest, carrying 280 lbs on my 6’5” frame. After too much time feeling miserable, I visited my doctor and was surprised to learn that I was pre-diabetic.
I shared my weight loss goal with my friends and family and then took action. I really didn’t want to let them down, so I improved my diet and spent more time playing basketball and working out.
Knowing my family and friends were in my court. Whether it was my family during the holidays, coworkers regularly checking in, or my wife cheering me on, I felt supported the entire way.
I ended up losing 80 lbs. Goal achieved.
It’s hard to be on your A-game all the time, so why not ask for support? Be held accountable, and let people cheer you on along the way.
One of the most effective ways to incorporate big consequences and big rewards is by creating a social challenge for yourself.
Tell your friends, your family or your co-workers about your goal. Yes, it can be tough to be this vulnerable. But. This can be the key for success.
There are times when you may not mind letting yourself down, but letting other people down? That’s a different story.
Think about an incentive that benefits both you and your support network.
Do you need to be held accountable for responding to emails within 24 hours? Let your co-workers know that if they don’t hear back from you by then, lunch is on you.
It’s incentive for your support team to hold you accountable, and incentive for you to respond in time. Far less expensive if you do!
The motivation to do what needs to be done. Think about what this looks like for you.
Maybe you don’t want to spend your paycheck on your co-workers’ lunches, so you push yourself to respond to emails on time.
Saving money is a huge motivator, but perhaps it’s something different for you.
Whatever the motivation, find what pushes you to act.
Set a deadline for yourself right away. Show yourself you’re serious and that you want to make a change. Accomplish what you need to and start today.
